On the way into work today I heard this interview on the Midmorning show.  Bishop Spong is softspoken and even tempered with a wise sounding voice.

But he said this.

You see, religion has been offered as a kind of panacea or as Karl Marx said ‘an opiate of the people’. I don’t think religion is designed to give us security or peace of mind. It think it’s primary focus, which we’ve lost, is to give us the courage to live in a radically insecure world with continued integrity, to live in a world where there is no peace with an inner peace that enables us not to fall apart. Those are the gifts of religion.

Wow. A description of the ‘gifts of religion’ that doesn’t mention God. Hmmm.

I’m pretty sure he didn’t mention God in the first ten minutes of the interview.
