To the best of my understanding (but certainly the documentation is not really clear on this, Converge Worldwide is the new name of the Baptist General Conference. If this is the case, let me just go on record as saying that I think it’s a bad idea.
Really, is there anyone who thinks this was a wise choice?

That link gives some info on the name change. No, probably not a real good idea. It is interesting that we really never hear anything about the conference at our church. I grew up in a church (North American Baptist Conference) where we heard a lot about the conference.

That’s funny. It sounds so typical and irrelevant.. uh, I mean cool and relevant.
I guess it was time to shed that weighty “Baptist” burden of a name.
And Andy, is that the NAB that has their seminary in Sioux Falls?? I grew up NAB… roots are German Baptist?

Baptist is so descriptive; it’s a shame to drop a part of the name that can so quickly point us back to things that are important if we get off track. Whatever the old stereotypes may be for any denomination, a descriptive name can help us stay on, or get back on, track.
I know some churches drop their denomination from their title to appear more open to everyone, but to me it just makes where they are coming from unclear–almost like they are trying to hide their heritage. I like to know history and basic beliefs, and I like churches to be up front about that.
Not only do some churches change their name, but you cannot find anywhere on their website who they are affiliated with or who they are accountable to. I’m less likely to visit or trust a church like that.
